Emirates Dermatology Society raises awareness on psoriasis
DUBAI, 2nd June, 2025 (WAM) — The Emirates Dermatology Society recently organised a public awareness march at Al Safa Park in Dubai as part of its campaign, Don’t Rest Until It’s Clear, to raise awareness and provide support for individuals affected by psoriasis.
Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects more than 125 million people worldwide. In addition to its visible symptoms, it can lead to emotional distress, mental health issues and social stigma. In the UAE, the disease affects approximately 3 to 4 percent of the population, in line with global rates.
Dr Ayman Al Naeem, President of the Emirates Dermatology Society under the Emirates Medical Association and Head of the Dermatology Department at Ibrahim Obaidullah Hospital, said the disease can affect men and women equally and is most common between the ages of 15 and 35. Though rare in early childhood, it can occur at any age.
He highlighted that biologic treatments are among the most advanced and effective options for moderate to severe cases, particularly when traditional treatments fail. However, he noted that while these therapies are highly effective with regular use, they are not a permanent cure, as symptoms may return if treatment stops.
Dr Al Naeem added that the UAE’s health insurance system is among the strongest in the region, with many insurers covering biologic treatments, especially for chronic or severe cases. Psoriasis, he explained, stems from immune system dysfunction and is influenced by genetic and environmental factors such as stress, psychological pressure and cold weather.
Dr Raghda Al Maashari, Head of Public Relations and Media at the Emirates Dermatology Society, said, “Through organising such events, we aim to dispel misconceptions, promote empathy and build a supportive environment for those living with psoriasis. This walk is more than just an event – it is a gesture of solidarity and a step towards a more inclusive and understanding society.”
Elhussein Abdel Latif, General Manager of Gulf–Arabian Company at AbbVie, said, “The Emirates Dermatology Society has long been a strategic partner, and our continued collaboration is focused on improving standards of care for psoriasis patients. Together, we hope to shape a future where this condition becomes a thing of the past, while improving quality of life for those affected.”
